Foundation Board – Mohawk College Foundation

THE ORGANIZATION

Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology is a dynamic and innovative College located in the Golden Horseshoe of Ontario, Canada.  Mohawk has three main campuses: the Fennell Campus located in Hamilton, the Stoney Creek Campus and the Mohawk-McMaster Institute for Applied Health Sciences located at McMaster University in Hamilton. As of 2016, more than 1,000 faculty instruct roughly 30,000 full-time and part-time students studying in more than 100 post-secondary and apprenticeship programs.  Since its founding in 1966, over 90,000 students have graduated from Mohawk College.

Mohawk College has a diverse program offering at the apprenticeship, continuing education, diploma and collaborative degree level, allowing students to optimize their education.  Cooperative education programs give students real-world experience, preparing them for successful careers in their field.  For the sixth consecutive year, Mohawk finished first in student satisfaction of all the colleges in the GTA and Hamilton area, and first in both graduate employment and satisfaction for the fourth year in a row.

With the launch of the 2016 – 2021 strategic plan, the college has established ambitious plans that commit it to becoming number one in the GTHA for employer satisfaction, number one in the Province for graduate employment and in the top 10 in Canada for applied research activity.  The college aims to double the number of college partners and strengthen its leadership role in simulation learning, Aboriginal education, environmental sustainability and social inclusion.

THE BOARD

The Mohawk Foundation is committed to raising funds and creating opportunities to develop new partnerships which enable donors to realize their own philanthropic aspirations and to provide funds and gifts to support the mission and vision of the College.  It is dedicated to building lifelong connections with students, alumni partners and communities to create positive change on and off the campus.  The Foundation, through its donors, supporters and partners supports the transformation of the Mohawk campus by establishing new programs, introducing the latest technology and outstanding facilities.  The focus for the immediate future will be on three capital projects:

  • Stoney Creek Connections – this project will provide a facility for multiple trades to collaborate and physically work together.
  • The Institute for Applied Health Sciences – this expansion project will feature technology enhanced simulation.
  • The Partnership and Innovation Centre – located on our Fennell campus, this project will support interdisciplinary learning and applied research in Engineering Technology with our industry partners.

These projects, along with continuing support of student scholarships and bursaries as well as industry donations and fund-raising events have the potential to change the lives of students.  The Foundation and its Board are key to Mohawk’s success as it continues on its transformational journey.

This is a voluntary board, comprised of 12 members (9 external and 3 internal).  Board members are committed to active fundraising and to supporting the College through participation in various events and activities.  The Board has five half day meetings per year.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Due to the expiry of Directors’ terms of office, there are vacancies on the Board at present.  Candidates must bring a passion for fundraising, building connections and networking on behalf of the College.  Ideally, they will be residents of Hamilton and committed to both the community and to the College.  Working closely with the staff of the Development office, the board will provide leadership in the creation of a fundraising strategy and programme.  Board members will be fundraising ambassadors for the College, helping to expand the donor network and building long term donor relationships with individuals, foundations, corporations and other institutional givers.  Board members will also play a personal role in supporting the development team, including attending events, personal giving, reaching out to specific donors etc.

This is an exciting time for the future of Mohawk and the Foundation is integral to realizing the College’s ambitious plans.
