DIRECTOR,  STRATEGY

Reports to: Chief Executive Officer

Location: Calgary, Alberta

 

MANDATE

Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Strategic Director is responsible for the development and oversight of all marketing communications planning for Anstice clients. Marketing communications planning includes audience planning and research, strategic brief process, marketing communication plan and budget development, as well as client presentations. The Strategic Director is responsible for maintaining clear line of sight into client projects and advising on strategic decisions to increase agency revenue and promote client retention.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

The position will include the following responsibilities:

Managing Audience Planning:

  • Develop and oversee tactical audience planning plans, including the creation and communication of the research approach, monitoring findings and analyzing results to configure into strategic documents
  • Onboard clients alongside the Programs Team to effectively discover client needs and strategic pillars.
  • Develop and lead exploration meetings and agendas/exercises required to discover client landscapes effectively
  • Continuous research and development of new audience planning techniques to incorporate into the business
  • Manage the Programs Team in the execution of audience planning tactics
  • Identify gaps existing within planned audience research, and lead team efforts in gathering additional data
  • Oversee the analysis and quality control of outputs
  • Execute interviews, surveys, discussion guides, as required within the audience planning plan
  • Communicate the audience planning process and plan to the client and Programs Team

Strategy and Marcom Development:

  • Develop a strong understanding of client marketing, communications, creative and business objectives through audience planning, in order to develop sound strategic briefs and marcom plans
  • Develop and assess client strategies in full, including strategic marcom plans, strategic briefs and creative briefs, as deemed necessary by the process
  • Drive client value wherever possible, upselling and maximizing company revenue
  • Manage client relationships and retention strategies through consistent client communication, issue resolution and coordination of enhanced service delivery
  • Develop fully integrated tactical marcom plans (social, digital, PR, events, paid traditional media, signage, community engagement, creative collateral, partnerships and video etc.) that identify timelines, metrics, general creative approach and are directly related to strategic findings and realistic to client budgets and resources
  • Create and present all client facing strategic documentation (strategic marcom plans, strategic briefs, creative briefs and proposals)
  • Contribute to and lead Anstice marketing efforts alongside the PR/Digital and Programs Teams.

Business Development

  • Play a lead role in the generation of new business leads
  • Maintain a focus on building business revenues and upselling through the Client Strategic Process
  • Attend client events (media functions, video/photo shoots and client appreciation events), maintaining a strong professional representation of Anstice
  • Work alongside the CEO in the development and presentation of business proposals
  • Represent Anstice at all client events and business development opportunities

Preliminary Creative Strategy Development 

  • Identify the broad creative approach and territory to guide in marcom creation
  • Develop key creative strategic pillars – language, tagline and overall high level content planning
  • Brief the Creative Team to ensure clear understanding of creative strategic approach of client assignments
  • Quality check creative client deliverables to ensure brief maintenance
  • Evaluate and understand client creative requirements alongside the Programs Team to ensure business alignment on client requirements, project scope, budget and deliverables

 

FIRST YEAR DELIVERABLES / MEASURES OF SUCCESS

Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:

  • Demonstrate diverse and unique on-brand strategic thought across varied client base
  • Efficiently build and present client-ready strategic and marcom presentations
  • Comprehend and communicate client strategic pillars effectively to the Anstice Team
  • Demonstrate the ability to work independently and gather research
  • Convert 65%+ of client leads into approved client projects for execution
  • Ensure on-time and on-budget marcom plans
  • Maintain a high staff and client retention rate
  • Develop new audience planning and strategic techniques bi-annually
  • Ensure exceptional client satisfaction with respect to marcom deliverables

 

CANDIDATE PROFILE

The successful candidate will have the following:

EDUCATION:

  • Post-secondary degree in marketing or a combination of education and experience appropriate to achieve the mandate

EXPERIENCE:

  • 8-10 years’ national and/or international agency or related experience
  • Proven ability to manage and execute multiple projects and clients at one time
  • Experience in analyzing and organizing information to create a specific strategic output

COMPETENCIES & ATTRIBUTES:

  • Strong initiative, drive and self-motivation
  • Well spoken, sophisticated communication style
  • Deep understanding and ability to communicate marketing value, purpose and current industry trends
  • Effective presentation development, including the ability to determine key requirements and translate into strategic documentation
  • Very strong understanding of the entire multi-channel marketing and communications matrix (tactical purpose, function, trends, metrics)
  • Strong creative aptitude
  • Ability to distill key insights from an Audience Planning Process
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with a variety of personalities and seniority levels
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Self-assertive with strong desire to succeed (high threshold for results and client deadlines)
  • Ability to translate marcom tactics into budget line items
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently but within a collaborative culture
  • Strong command of MS PowerPoint, Keynote and MS Excel
  • Quick learner with a flexible and adaptive attitude
