Human Resources Director - #4874

With approximately 250 employees in two offices, the firm is organized into thirteen practice areas including aboriginal law; banking and financial services; business services; commercial litigation; commercial real estate; insurance litigation; intellectual property & innovation; labour & employment; life & disability; natural resources; securities; taxation services; and wills, estates & wealth management. The goal of their 100+ lawyers is to meet and exceed client service expectations, and to continuously improve on the level and method of that service delivery.
THE POSITION
Located in Edmonton, the Human Resources Director reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer, and oversees all HR related functions for the Edmonton office. In conjunction with the Management team, the Human Resources Director will develop and execute a human resources strategy while providing leadership, direction and support in resource planning, the development and implementation of HR policies, programs and services that support the strategic goals of the firm.
Key accountabilities include:
Planning and Leadership
- Create a strategy to attract and retain high performing employees;
- Provide support, guidance, coaching, education, and direction to the firm’s personnel on Human Resources related matters;
- Lead the orientation, and ongoing training and development of support staff; and
- Be a role model of professional conduct and pursuing excellence by seeking opportunities for continuous improvement, and producing creative and/or unique work solutions.
- Lead by example in maintaining a collaborative work environment by instilling a team approach within the Administration group.
Human Resources Services & Programs
- Develop guidelines, policies, and procedures within the context of the firm’s culture;
- Manage and support the recruitment process for employees at all levels in the firm;
- Execute a performance management program for support staff;
- Identify and implement effective training and professional development programs;
- Maintain accurate personnel records, including the maintenance of a vacation tracking system;
- Manage the total rewards program including annual salary increases for support staff;
- Oversee the administration of the compensation and benefits programs including timely processing of employee information.
Employee Relations & Communication
- Communicate policies, procedures and legislation to employees;
- Recommend practices necessary to establish a positive employer-employee relationship;
- Promote a high level of employee morale and motivation;
- Investigate any employee complaints or concerns that are brought forward;
- Coach employees on a variety of performance-related issues;
- Ensure compliance with employment and legislative regulations;
- Solicit collaborative input from management and employees on programs and services; and
- Promote a service oriented, enthusiastic, collaborative and respectful, fun environment.
Facilities
- Project manage office renovations if required;
- Manage office/space allocation and oversee coordination of inter-office moves;
- Source and hire construction professionals for ongoing maintenance of office; and
- Manage the procurement of office furniture and fittings.
THE INDIVIDUAL
- Successful completion of relevant education. A CHRP Designation is a definite asset;
- 5 to 7 years of progressively senior level human resources generalist experience, preferably in a law firm or other professional services environment;
- Excellent ability to relate to people at all levels while providing advisement, coaching, support and guidance;
- A strategic thinker with a self directed approach to dealing with multiple competing priorities;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; and
- A high level of integrity, empathy, confidentiality, and ethics coupled with confidence and a service oriented approach to business.
