Faculty Position, Dental Hygiene

The Dental Hygiene program is seeking applications for two full-time faculty positions. The successful incumbent will join a leading national Dental Hygiene Program and be part of a vibrant and strong Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry with a vision for change. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to play an active role in the development of Dental Hygiene Master’s and PhD level programs in support of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry’s goals to further its academic mission, to develop new research initiatives and to create opportunities for the achievement of excellence internationally.

The incumbent will split their time between teaching and mentoring students; doing research to enhance and further the academic goals of the Department; and related administrative duties within the Department of Dentistry and the Dental Hygiene program.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Providing leadership in research and in the development of curriculum and services supporting a world-class program in Dental Hygiene;
  • Close cooperation and partnership within the Dental Hygiene program, the School of Dentistry and within the Faculty;
  • Promoting collaborative research across disciplines, building on strengths and utilizing the existing resources available at the University of Alberta and with external partners such as the Health Outcome Research Institute (currently being developed);
  • A focus on didactic teaching methods, health outcomes and delivery research;
  • Contributing actively to the development of the program’s academic structure and capacity in order to further amplify the academic reputation of the Dental Hygiene program at the University of Alberta;
  • Supporting, contributing to and encouraging key initiatives such as the creation of Canada’s first Master’s level program in Dental Hygiene and the first Doctorate level Dental Hygiene program in the world; and
  • Recruitment, supervision and mentorship of students and junior faculty at the University of Alberta.
It is important that the successful candidate possess the following attributes:
  • A minimum of a Master’s degree in Dental Hygiene; preference will be given to a Ph.D level Dental Hygienist;
  • Demonstrated excellence in: didactic teaching; leading research initiatives; and developing and implementing academic program guidelines;
  • Successful track record in gaining external research funding;
  • An established investigator with experience on grant panels and as a scientific journal peer reviewer or editor;
  • Visionary with demonstrated ability to participate as a cohesive, collaborative team member, focused on advancing the academic capacity of Dental Hygiene;
  • Strong academic scholar with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build relationships that bring a variety of disciplines and expertise together; and
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Dental Hygiene Program
The School of Dentistry offers a three year Diploma in Dental Hygiene and a four year Bachelor of Science (Dental Hygiene Specialization). During the fourth year of the Bachelor Program, students will learn the foundation of research; expand their knowledge in health promotion utilizing principles and theories of learning, health care organization theory and interdisciplinary ethics. The School also offers a Degree Completion program for students who have earned a Diploma in the field. The Dental Hygiene program enables students to acquire knowledge and develop skills so that they may assume positions of responsibility in private dental practice or community health care settings. The Dental Hygiene program has been approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada.

The School is creating a centre for excellence in the area of oral health delivery research which will work in conjunction with the Health Outcome Research Institute (HORI) in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. The oral health delivery research group will include Endowed Dental Chairs for Clinical Research and Gerontology Research.

In alignment with the Faculty, the School of Dentistry is focused on building its overall research capacity with the goal of offering a world-class Dental Hygiene Program. The strategic plan for the School of Dentistry includes plans to develop MSc and PhD programs in Dental Hygiene, which will be the first programs of its kind to be offered in Canada. This presents an exciting opportunity for the right person to play a key role in shaping the future of Dental Hygiene.
