THE COMPANY
Our client is headquartered in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Today the business consists of seventeen companies that supply a range of products and services, including plant shut down maintenance, field maintenance, pipe fabrication and assembly, pressure vessel manufacturing, modular fabrication, highly-skilled welding, chromium carbide overlay, wear resistance plates, machining and repair and transportation supply services to a broad customer base of major industrial producers. For over twenty years our operating companies continue to provide innovative solutions, customer service excellence and quality work done safely to the energy and pulp & paper industry.

Primarily focused on servicing the Forestry, Oilsands Region and Conventional oil & gas sector in Alberta and Northern BC, our client’s seventeen businesses provide support to three general areas throughout Alberta, BC and Quebec.

THE POSITION
The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will report to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is responsible for leading senior management in the Industrial Services and Fabrication & Wear Technology divisions and to position both divisions at the forefront of the industry. The COO will guide six Vice Presidents, over 250 salaried employees, and up to 3000 contracted employees. The role will have oversight for the Oilsands, North Peace, Central and Southern Operations within Alberta, along with Northern British Columbia and Saskatchewan operations, and will be accountable for safety, production efficiency, quality, service, and cost-effective management of resources while providing a strategic platform for sustainable growth. The successful individual will play a key part of the executive team in setting the strategic direction, and be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the corporate aspects of the annual budget in conjunction with the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and CEO.

Key success factors:

Strategic Business Planning:
  • As a key member of the executive leadership team, work to define the company’s operational, production and overall strategic objectives and to plan, manage and carry out a course of action to achieve these objectives;
  • Through effective leadership and management, implement the organization’s business goals into the operations to ensure integration and alignment, and to achieve results; and
  • Establish and implement both short and long range goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.
Operational Effectiveness
  • Provide leadership and support with respect to environmental, health and safety initiatives;
  • Manage the operational and fiscal activities of the business units to include: staffing levels, budgets, and financial goals;
  • Implement processes and procedures to improve the operating quality and efficiency of the business;
  • Create a high performance environment through engaged employees and a focus on professional development;
  • Evaluate performance of managers for compliance with established policies and objectives of the company and contributions in attaining objectives; and
  • Analyze, document and continually improve business processes and programs.
Strategic Leadership
  • Engage, build, motivate, mentor and manage the operational teams to ensure they remain committed to the business objectives of the organization and know they are adding value;
  • The COO will inspire vision for the team to achieve continuous improvement and reliability excellence in the operation of the company’s facilities; and
  • Partner with the executive team to represent the company with external groups, including community, governmental, and service organizations.
Organizational Effectiveness
  • Act as a lead change agent and transformational leader by applying steadfast change management principles and working with the management team to deploy the same in each region;
  • Effectively lead the divisions through a dynamic growth phase in alignment with the rest of the organization;
  • Work closely with senior managers from Transportation Services and Distribution divisions in supporting integration of business activities; and
  • Ensure that all programs and initiatives operate consistently and ethically within the mission and values of the company.

Ideal Experience:
  • Minimum 20 years of relevant industry experience showing progression of senior leadership roles for the past 10+ years;
  • An undergraduate degree combined with the completion of a master’s degree in engineering, business or finance would be an asset;
  • Knowledge and experience from one or more of the related fields: Construction, Oilsands, Conventional Oil & Gas and Petro-chemical Industry, and Forestry;
  • A proven track record of successfully leading an organization’s operational functions in one or more of the following areas: fabrication, field construction, plant shutdowns, maintenance and/or field operations;
  • Experience in strategic planning, formulating policy, and developing and executing new strategies and procedures;
  • Previous experience in a large, diverse and multi-location service organization(s);
  • Proven track record of leading change management initiatives and supporting cultural shifts while maintaining efficient productivity and quality; and
  • Must have the ability to travel to operations across Western Canada.
