Alberta Dental Association and College Chair in Geriatric Oral Health - #2459
The Position
The Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry and School of Dentistry is dedicated to the lifelong education of its students in order that they may excel as dental professionals; ultimately ensuring the highest quality of dental care for Albertans and beyond. This is achieved by a commitment to internationally recognized standards of excellence in teaching, patient services, and research with this objective being fully supported by both the University and the Province of Alberta.
The objective for the Alberta Dental Association and College (ADA+C) Chair in Geriatric Oral Health is to better understand emerging science concerning relationships between oral and systemic health, and to improve the efficiency and quality of care delivery to seniors. In 1991, Canada’s population was 27 million; 3.2 million (11.7%) were over 65 years of age. By 2011, 14.1% of the population will be over 65 years, and there will be a substantial increase in the elderly (people over 80 years). The ADA+C Chair in Geriatric Oral Health will develop and promote excellence in research, education and recognition of oral health and systemic health linkages that will synergize with other Faculty priorities thereby impacting the lives of Albertans for many years to come. The ADA+C Chair in Geriatric Oral Health will also act as catalyst for Geriatric Oral Health research within the Province of Alberta and promote the translation of research to multidisciplinary health delivery specialists. Further support from the ADA+C includes access to two state of the art mobile dental units that are available to provide patient care to Alberta’s many diverse communities.
The ADA+C Chair in Geriatric Oral Health was established with a generous five-year pledge, and subject to satisfactory review by the Dean, Head of the School of Dentistry and Vice Dean Research of the Faulty of Medicine & Dentistry, may be renewed for a second five-year term. The endowment will be invested, managed and controlled in accordance with the investment and endowment policies of the University of Alberta. Additional support will be made available over time through the Province of Alberta’s “Access the Future Fund”. Established in 2005 by the Access to the Future Act, the Fund receives income from an endowment that is targeted to reach $3 billion at full implementation.
The establishment of the Alberta Dental Association and College Chair in Geriatric Oral Health is one of the ways the School of Dentistry is able to achieve and further its academic mission, develop new research initiatives and opportunities for the achievement of excellence internationally and nationwide. The successful incumbent will be joining a renewed national Program and be part of a vibrant and strong Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry that embraces a vision for change.
