THE POSITION
Our client is seeking a senior manager for a newly created position entitled Outage Service Leader. The Outage Service Leader will work at the Keephills and Sundance plant locations, approximately 70 km west of Edmonton, and will report to the Vice President of Coal & Mining. The Outage team is responsible for managing all plant shutdown and turnaround projects at our client’s three coal plants. The Outage Service Leader will manage a team of four Outage Manager’s who are the direct liaison to the Plant Managers. The Outage Managers will lead a cross functional team comprised of specialized staff in turbine and boiler operations along with a Turnaround Services Leader responsible for all temporary and contract staff supporting the shutdown initiative.

The Outage Services Leader is responsible for the strategic direction of the shutdown operations. Planning and leading both scheduled and forced outages with the goal of meeting project timelines, efficiencies and cost initiatives will be the requirement of the position. Planned outages are scheduled on two year intervals with shutdown ranging from 30 – 60 days. Managing a budget of up to $50M, and an asset budget of up to $150M, attributes to the critical contribution this leader will have.

The successful candidate will provide leadership to a dedicated team; they will be a liaison with senior management in areas such as engineering, procurement, material management, planning and project controls, environmental health and safety and finance. The individual will challenge the status quo by creating new processes and procedures that will result in efficiencies and best practices. The candidate will be clear in expectations and communication, will have the confidence to delegate, will take directive action and will have worked in a unionized environment understanding contractors.

Team Leadership
  • Provide coaching, mentorship and leadership to a dedicated team;
  • A critical component will be to mentor the four Outage Manager’s creating strength in their abilities, in the team and in succession planning for the organization;
  • Ensure learning, growth and developmental plans are in place for all direct reports and their teams;
  • Provide ongoing feedback and an annual performance evaluation for direct reports, including the preparation of annual goals and objectives;
  • Provide clear direction and ongoing communication of the goals to the group;
  • Establish high standards of personal performance with continuous emphasis on achievement of results; and
  • Lead a culture of transparency, openness, communication and team with safety and fiscal responsibility at the forefront.
Strategic Development/Long Range Planning
  • Work with Senior Executive to assess organizational goals creating strategy and actionable recommendations;
  • Work with the leadership team and provide insight, analysis and recommendations around emerging issues, trends, and changes;
  • Develop the strategy and support the multiple outage projects with excellence in:
    • Safety and environmental performance
    • Project financial management
    • Quality assurance and control
    • Schedule compliance and management;
    • Managing people and teams to successful outcomes.

Ideal Experience:
  • Post secondary education in Mechanical Engineering ideal with equivalent experience being considered;
  • 15 + years of senior leadership experience within the industrial construction industry demonstrating project management experience with a proven track record of success;
  • 10 - 15 years experience in plant shutdown operations;
  • Experience in a power plant or petrochemical environment would be considered an asset;
  • Demonstrated time management and project management skills;
  • Knowledge of safety codes, unionized labour environment and operating procedures of a plant;
  • Strong communication, analytical and planning skills;
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines within budget and exceeding safety goals;
  • Knowledge of Primavera project management tools ideal.
Ideal Personal Profile:
  • Previous experience in large, diverse and multi-location service organization(s);
  • Knowledge of power, oil & gas, construction or industrial environments is an asset;
