The Company
Our client is a publicly-traded power generation and wholesale marketing company focused on creating long-term shareholder value. They maintain a low risk profile for investors by operating a highly contracted portfolio of assets in Canada, the U.S. and Australia. Their focus is to efficiently operate their coal fired, gas fired, hydro, and renewable facilities in order to provide their customers with a reliable, low cost source of power. Since their inception, they have been a responsible operator and a proud contributor to the communities where they work and live.

THE POSITION
Reporting to the Vice President of Coal & Mining, the Director of Operations will lead all activities within their designated plant in order to meet the goals and targets including driving safe work practices, improving reliability and reducing costs.

This plant is the largest coal-fired generating facility in western Canada, with six generating units and is located 70 kilometers west of Edmonton, Alberta. Typically, plants are designed for optimal efficiency and as they age this efficiency can be improved through uprates. An uprate usually occurs only once in a plant’s life. This particular plant has had 3 of its 6 units’ uprated. A 53-megawatt uprate was completed in 2009 at a cost of $75 million. Additionally, a 44-megawatt uprate was completed in 2001 and a 53-megawatt uprate in 2007.

This plant has numerous environmental highlights to be proud of! It was the location for a mercury control test in 2006 with the objective of meeting the Alberta government’s goal of reducing mercury emissions by 70% of which it had an overall capture rate of 70%! This plant has been the recipient of many awards and recognitions such as the ISO 14001 for its strategic and holistic approach to environmental policy; along with the OHSAS 18001 creating policy to minimize risk to employees and others.

As the Director of Operations, you will be responsible for leading a team of three Plant Manager’s each assigned to two generating units; along with direct reports in Engineering, Human Resources/Information Technology, Finance, Supply Chain Management, Environmental Services and Common Systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for nine direct reports and approximately 400 indirect reports. You will have full profit and loss responsibility for the operation.

Key accountabilities include:
  • Manage employees, contractors, equipment, and work conditions to ensure employees work safe and in an environmentally responsible manner - aligned to meet the Company’s objectives of Target Zero and Plant Policies & Procedures.
  • Lead the Performance Management Process to ensure the success of timely and relevant career development and succession planning.
  • Set and/or manage the Company and legislative standards, policies and procedures for the plant to ensure compliance.
  • Lead the development of short and long term plans and strategies for the operation.
  • Manage the capital and operating budgets and ensure effective cost management.
  • Direct the evaluation and introduction of new and existing technology to ensure the practice of continuous improvement.
  • Sponsor and facilitate change through recognizing, initiating, supporting and accepting responsibility for change management to ensure best practices are utilized to support the business.
  • Communicate in a timely and relevant manner the overall health and success of operations to ensure progress is aligned with Company needs.
  • Lead work relationships with other departments to ensure integration and collaboration of competing interests.
  • Other responsibilities as directed.
THE INDIVIDUAL
It is important that the successful candidate possesses the following education, experience and leadership skills:

Education and Experience:
  • A thorough understanding of plant operations including accountability to profit and loss.
  • A minimum of 20 years experience in either the petrochemical or power industry including a minimum of 10 years experience in supervisory, management and/or leadership positions, with a demonstrated progression in attaining and successfully performing in more senior roles.
  • Successful completion of a post-secondary education in the area of a Trade Certificate, Technology Diploma, or Engineering Degree, or in a related discipline, is highly desirable. A combination of experience and relevant education will also be considered.
  • Experience working and leading in a unionized environment is highly desired.
