Vice President, Oilsands Region - #2365
THE COMPANY
Our client is headquartered in Sherwood Park, Alberta. Today the business consists of seventeen companies that supply a range of products and services, including plant shut down maintenance, field maintenance, pipe fabrication and assembly, pressure vessel manufacturing, modular fabrication, highly-skilled welding, chromium carbide overlay, wear resistance plates, machining and repair and transportation supply services to a broad customer base of major industrial producers. Primarily focused on servicing the Forestry, Oilsands Region and Conventional oil & gas sector in Alberta and Northern BC, our client’s seventeen businesses provide support to three general areas throughout Alberta, BC and Quebec.

THE POSITION
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Vice President, Oilsands Region will play a key leadership role in the execution of a renewed strategic focus, cultural transformation and growth of the organization. The Vice President, Oilsands Region will have full P&L responsibility of approximately $120 MM and the mandate to effectively oversee the day-to-day operations of Clearwater Maintenance, Phoenix Machining and Golosky Contracting. The focus for this role will be to promote revenue, profitability and growth in the Oilsands Region while leading a high performing, safety focused operations and execution team.
Responsible for five direct reports and up to 700 employees in total, this role is responsible to drive the operational shift and cultural transformation by fostering strong relationships and supporting the professional growth of their team. While preserving the vitality of the successful organization, this role will be seen as a leader and change agent in order to take the Region to new heights. Key success factors:
- Strategic Business Planning – As a key member of the senior leadership team, support the implementation of the corporate strategic plan to advance the company’s mission and objectives and to promote revenue, profitability and growth in the Oilsands Region.
- Operational Effectiveness – Responsible for management of the operational and full fiscal activities of the Region to insure safety, production efficiency, quality, service, and cost-effective
management of resources. Plan and develop systems and procedures to improve the operating quality and efficiency of the business units.
- People Leadership – Create a high performance environment through engaged employees, a focus on safety, professional development and improved processes.
- Organizational Change Management – Act as a lead change agent by developing and bringing to life a change program and effectively lead the organization through a dynamic growth phase.
Key accountabilities include:
- Lead health, safety and environmental programs and initiatives;
- Manage the operational and fiscal activities of the business units to include: staffing levels, budgets, and financial goals;
- Establish, implement and mange to short- and long-range goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures;
- Promote the company through personal involvement at customer events, trade shows and other network / promotional events;
- Assume a primary role in initiating and maintaining a connection with new and potential prime clients and subcontractors to facilitate positive relationships and communication;
- Analyze and document business processes and problems and develop solutions to drive efficiencies in the business;
- Lead and support the team to resolve complex operation problems;
- Plan and oversee all operational activities and approve all major proposals;
- Drive operational efficiencies and synergies amongst the business units and skills of the greater team;
- Working with the accounting and finance group manage financial performance of the business including collaboratively working with the credit team on risk management; receivables and bad debts;
- Provide opportunity and hold the team accountable to achieve the organizations and the teams goals;
- Ensure the team is informed of the operational, business development, and performance of the business in order to meet the goals;
- Effectively communicate with Supervisors, Managers, Divisional Vice Presidents and Executives on business operations;
- Engage, lead, build, motivate, mentor and manage the team to ensure they remain committed to the team, their personal development and the business objectives to ensure they are adding value;
- Coach and provide career development advice to management team and staff;
- Provide leadership and build a culture that fosters teamwork and creates a cohesive organization with the common objective of achieving established goals; and
- Establish employee goals and conduct employee performance reviews.
THE INDIVIDUAL
Given the leading role this individual will be expected to play in achieving the strategic objectives of the Oilsands region it is essential that the successful candidate possess the following core competencies, experience and attributes:
- Formal education with a diploma or degree in Business, Engineering, or related fields;
- Several years of progressive operations management experience with a minimum of five years of senior-level leadership;
- Ideally, the successful incumbent will have working knowledge and experience in the mining, construction and oil & gas industry. In addition, experience in managing fabrication, field construction, plant shutdowns, maintenance, labour supply and field operations, will be considered an asset;
- Must have experience living and working in Northern communities as well as have a clear understanding of the culture. Preference will be given to individuals currently working in the Wood Buffalo region;
- A visionary, able to establish a strategic plan for the region and be accountable for execution of the plan in accordance with the organizational direction;
- Highly effective at translating business priorities into operating realities with a proven ability to work at all levels to execute operating plans within budget, quality and time requirements;
- Proven track record of leading change management initiatives and supporting cultural shifts while maintaining efficient productivity and quality;
- Ability to create a safe, collaborative and respectful working environment and culture;
- A very effective, people-oriented leader with a reputation for quickly building credibility and successfully attracting, mentoring, motivating and respecting employees;
- Leads by example by building and maintaining positive working relationships throughout the organization and its employees resulting in continuous improvement and operational excellence;
- A proven record of developing and managing new business opportunities through an established network of relationships in the industrial construction industry (heavy oil, oil sands, mining, power, and petrochemicals);
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills;
- Excellent personal and professional ability to prepare, present, participate in and facilitate group meetings and business presentations;
- Experience analyzing financial data and implementing performance action plans to improve operational results;
- Working knowledge of short and long term budgeting, forecasting and project management;
- Willing to work a flexible schedule; and
- Recognized as being an effective, contributing member of the team.
