The Company
Our client is a publicly-traded power generation and wholesale marketing company focused on creating long-term shareholder value. They maintain a low risk profile for investors by operating a highly contracted portfolio of assets in Canada, the U.S. and Australia. Their focus is to efficiently operate their coal fired, gas fired, hydro, and renewable facilities in order to provide their customers with a reliable, low cost source of power. The Role
Reporting to the Vice President, Engineering & Construction, the Director, Construction Management will be responsible to ensure construction projects are planned and executed safely, on time and on budget.

This role will be charged with establishing a diverse team of construction staff capable of delivering against comprehensive construction plans and objectives, involving multiple sources of power generation. This portfolio will consist of coal, gas, hydro, wind, and geothermal installations.

Your construction expertise will be required to propose and implement effective resource utilization, including the engagement of 3rd party contractors, as well as facilitate proper governance and oversight to the construction stage of these projects. Project locations will cut across numerous Canadian provinces and U.S. states.

The successful candidate will ensure that proper construction and safety standards and procedures are employed, and will look for opportunities to innovate construction practices aimed at enhancing the Company’s competitive advantage.

Specific Responsibilities:
  • Build, mentor, and lead a construction team to meet the demands of our current growth initiatives.
  • Establish, manage, and optimize construction team’s budget.
  • Provide construction expertise (coal, gas, hydro, wind, geo-thermal), not only at the construction stage, but coordinate with the developers in scoping, and the operations teams through commissioning and transition.
  • Provide input into the creation, evaluation and execution of longer term development, growth and productivity strategies.
  • Ensure the necessary and appropriate construction standards, policy and procedures are in place and followed.
  • As a key member of the Engineering & Construction (E & C) department, work with other E & C leaders to build talent, structure, and organization to provide sustainable and effective E & C services.
  • Recruit, allocate, and lead construction resources, including acquiring 3rd party resources when appropriate.
  • Recruit, coach, mentor, and provide direction to the construction team members and ensure professional development and succession plans are in place for all staff.
  • Assess, evaluate & resolve construction related challenges that may arise during project concept, construction and commissioning stages.
  • Participate in construction condition assessments, providing configuration and logistic solutions on potential asset acquisitions.
  • Maintain external industry relationships, reporting on current issues and future trends, with a view to maintain and/or upgrade skills and knowledge of the construction staff and resources.
  • Provide key leadership in the areas of environment, health and safety, ensuring these topics are top of mind for all staff and contractors.
  • Establish and effective construction and contractor strategies for all types of generation projects.
  • Apply rigor and discipline to employing construction standards, and seek to incorporate lessons learned through execution.
  • Develop / establish standards and protocol with respect to tools, equipment and process during construction.
  • Coordinate closely with other technical teams, operations groups and corporate support departments.
  • Perform and participate in project “Readiness Reviews”.
  • Monitor construction management activities, make recommendations to project managers for improvements and take corrective actions as appropriate.
  • Report against milestones on a frequent basis.
  • Review and provide input on policies and procedures governing project management, project controls, engineering and procurement that impact construction activities.
The Person
To be successful, the ideal candidate should possess the following education, skills and experience:
  • Engineering degree, Technical diploma, or Senior Trades experience.
  • 15 plus years of construction experience involving power generation projects (coal, gas, hydro, wind, geothermal).
  • Experience leading construction projects involving multiple trades and construction disciplines, both in plant and field installation sites.
  • 5 to 10 years experience leading and mentoring staff.
  • High degree of motivation coupled with strong communication, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Proven track record of successful project construction completion on time and on budget, often exceeding expectations.
  • Experience with all aspects of project development, permitting, construction, and operations.
  • Knowledgeable of all aspects of central plant construction, including civil, foundations, buildings, piping, mechanical equipment, electrical and instrumentation would be beneficial.
  • Experience involving construction of renewable generation facilities desired.
  • Demonstrated track record in fostering and engaging in aboriginal and community relations.
  • Experienced in successfully dealing with, and promoting collaboration with diverse stakeholder groups both internally and externally.
  • Capable of translating and presenting construction related concepts to senior management and governance bodies.
  • A willingness and ability to travel frequently.

The Location
The role is located in Calgary, Alberta, with frequent travel to field operations.
