Director, Development Engineering - #4646
The Company
Our client is a publicly-traded power generation and wholesale marketing company focused on creating long-term shareholder value. They maintain a low risk profile for investors by operating a highly contracted portfolio of assets in Canada, the U.S. and Australia. Their focus is to efficiently operate their coal fired, gas fired, hydro, and renewable facilities in order to provide their customers with a reliable, low cost source of power. The Role
Reporting to the Vice President, Engineering & Construction, the Director, Development Engineering will be responsible to provide engineering support to projects and initiatives defined in our current growth and expansion plans.
This role will be charged with establishing a diverse team of development engineers capable of providing expertise and knowledge across a wide range of engineering disciplines. Working either directly, or through assignment of your staff, you will be accountable to participate with the development teams, imparting technical and operating knowledge, performing analysis, and making recommendations or solutions to the development or acquisition initiatives at hand.
The successful candidate will ensure proper engineering due diligence is performed and that engineering and corporate standards are defined and followed. The Director, Development Engineering may determine, and thereby be responsible for, that the work should be provided by third party consultants and service providers.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Build, mentor, and lead a team of development engineers (mechanical, electrical, civil) to meet the demands of our current growth initiatives.
- Establish, manage, and optimize your team budget.
- Provide engineering expertise regarding process, equipment, operations and technology across multiple forms of generation (coal, gas, hydro, wind, geo-thermal) to the larger cross-functional development teams.
- Provide input into the creation, evaluation and execution of longer term development, growth and productivity strategies.
- Ensure the necessary and appropriate engineering standards, policy and procedures are in place and followed.
- As a key member of the Engineering & Construction (E & C) department, work with other E & C leaders to build talent, structure, and organization to provide sustainable and effective E & C services.
- Recruit and allocate engineering resources to support development initiatives, including acquiring third party resources when appropriate.
- Assess, evaluate & resolve technical issues that may arise during project concept, design, construction and commissioning stages.
- Identify technical and operational issues, constraints, and solutions on green field, brown field, acquisition and productivity based development projects.
- Prepare preliminary engineering to assess & select technical options and solutions for generating plant layouts, equipment and configurations.
- Participate in facility and equipment condition assessments, providing technical input and analysis on potential asset acquisitions.
- Assist with technical reviews of new technologies.
- Work closely with other engineering teams, coordinate with operations, and be prepared to engage multiple corporate business departments as required.
- Ensure employee safety is paramount at all times.
- Be prepared to report against milestones on a frequent basis.
- Maintain external industry relationships, reporting on current issues and future trends.
The Person
To be successful, the ideal candidate should possess the following education, skills and experience:
- Engineering degree with registration as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Alberta.
- 12 to 15 years of engineering experience, having worked on projects in the power generation and or utility industry.
- 5 to 10 years experience in leading and directing project teams in either functional or cross functional environments.
- A good blend of engineering and business experience.
- A solid track record in planning and executing large capital projects, or capital programs, delivering consistent, positive business results, bringing projects home safely, on time and on budget.
- A strong Project Management approach to delivering results.
- Demonstrated ability to actively lead or participate on cross functional teams, imparting both strategic and logistical engineering knowledge.
- Have the presence and confidence to be decisive, foster innovation and be prepared to take action.
- Experienced in successfully dealing with, and promoting collaboration with diverse stakeholder groups both internally and externally.
- Proven ability to engage and appreciate the linkages between technical, operations, commercial and business objectives.
- Capable of translating and presenting highly technical concepts to senior management and governance bodies.
- Strong desire and ability to take on challenges engage and influence people to achieve project goals, and continually drive to achieve positive results.
- Commitment to safety leadership.
- Willing and able to travel on a regular basis.

The Location
This position will be based in Calgary, Alberta. Travel to existing operating geographies will be required.
